ALBUM REVIEW
Artist: Victoria White Album: The Upside Exec. Producer: Victoria White Label: Koch Records Release Date: May 13, 2008
New Jersey native Victoria White's debut album, The Upside is a wonderful blend of Jazz, R&B and acoustic music. Her style is a combination of Amel Larrieux/Vivian Green, with a touch of India Arie and Tracey Chapman- no kidding.
White's voice has a lovely soft sound that can crossover into many genres. Her acoustic sound and guitar melodies can compete with those aforementioned. Although her style is similar to Green and Arie she is no imitator. White has definitely come onto the music scene with her own vibe. The album is filled with songs about love but not your typical love songs. Each track tells a story and as a listener you feel like you are on a journey through music's best genres.
The first single "Can't Buy Love" is a smooth groove and can be found on your local jazz or adult contemporary station. Tracks such as "Take Me Home" and "Exodus" are among the tracks on the album that have a down tempo R&B sound. Just as a storyteller does, White does an outstanding job painting a picture of each song. Additional highlights of the album are "Something" and "Keep On" featuring Brian Culbertson on the piano.
If you are music lover that enjoys a nice mix, The Upside is one for your collection. Victoria White may not be main stream but her style is uplifting and relaxing. The album is not a bore and has you wanting more.
