ALBUM REVIEW

Artist: Common
Album: Universal Mind Control
Exec. Producer: Common, Derek Dudley, Neptunes & Kanye West
Label: Geffen
Release Date: December 9, 2008

Typically known for smooth flows and conscious lyrics over jazzy tunes, Common takes a risky approach in his eighth album Universal Mind Control. Common says of this album he wanted to try something new, a club album. UMC has a little bit of everything from 80's/techno driven tracks to hardcore rhymes to beats often heard in the club. But does it fall short of its quality?

The Neptunes assisted Common on the majority of the tracks and proves not to be a perfect match (with the exception of the title track which has me pop lockin' every time I hear it). The Neptunes produce great beats and sounds that are reminiscent of the 80's. However Common's lyrics often lack content and the flow is not as smooth as one is use to hearing from him.

Attempts to display hardness on tracks "Announcement" and "Gladiator" where he uses the infamous line from the movie- "Are you not entertained?" as part of the chorus/hook are exactly that-attempts. Instead Common displays empty lyrics over hardcore beats. There are a few mediocre tracks such as "Everywhere" featuring Martina Topley Bird and "Inhale" which has a fresh beat but Common's flow is not up to par.

There are some highlights on the album such as "Make My Day" featuring Cee-Lo. Cee-Lo and Common are a nice blend. And on this track Common explores new ground without trying too be hard. The track has an 80's feel that makes a listener want to hit repeat. Other highlights include "Changes" and "Punch Drunk Love" featuring his fellow Chi-town native Kanye West. "Changes" is the only track that displays the Common that is well known and loved. This song undoubtedly is in honor of our recent president elect. "Punch Drunk Love" definitely appeals to the ladies a not so unfamiliar ground for Common.

Much respect to Common for trying something new, taking a chance. However, most of the album is a bit of a stretch even for such a talented artist. If you can get pass the few raw tracks on this album its worth buying. Otherwise it may just be worth downloading the highlights of the album from iTunes.
