ALBUM REVIEW
Artist: Slum Village Album: Trinity (Past, Present And Future) Exec. Producer: RJ Rice & Timothy Maynor Label: Capital/Barak Release Date: August 13, 2002
Although I did pick up there previous albums Fantastic Vol. 2 & Dirty District [which was more of a compilation album] I really wasn't feeling Slum Village as much as I would have liked. But after hearing the ''Tainted'' joint I figured I would give them another chance. So how do I feel about them now? Well after listening to Trinity, my opinion about them hasn't changed much.
Ever since A Tribe Called Quest left the scene, i've been looking for a group to try & fill that void, & as much as I would like that to be Slum Village it just isn't the same. Maybe my expectations are to high. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid album but I guess I went into it expecting a little more than what I got.
The album features pretty good production & the lyrical style of the MC's are fine & work well with each other. My problem is when i listened to the album, I couldn't find any one track that stood out more than ''Tainted'' [except for maybe ''Star'' which also features Dwele], but I also couldn't find any one track that was just straight up horrible.
The bottom line is the album plays fine, I can listen to it without skipping tracks, but I never find myself wanting go back & replay a track after hearing it. That is the only problem I have with this album. If you like artists like Common or Talib Kweli, then you might want to give this one a try. It makes for great background music for when you have people over. SonicAmp Rating: 7/10 |
