ALBUM REVIEW
Artist: State Property Presents Album: The Chain Gang Vol. II Exec. Producer: Damon Dash, Shawn Carter, Kareem Burke & Dwight Grant Label: Roc-A-Fella Records Release Date: August 12, 2003
Well it's been a while since we've heard anything out of the Roc-A Fella camp, but with the release of The Chain Gang Vol. II followed by Juelz Santana's From Me To U the Roc has kicked off a wave of new albums that will take us through the end of the year. With albums by Jay-Z, Memphis Bleek, Cam'Ron & the heavily anticipated [by yours truly] M.O.P. all due before the end of the year it looks like its gonna be a Roc-A-Fella fall/winter.
And they start it off on a decent note with The Chain Gang Vol. II. The album is a follow up to the State Property Soundtrack & features most of the same artists. Beanie, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, Young Chris, Oschino & Sparks, the whole gang is here. And just like the first album some songs are banging & others are just plain.
On the first album, Freeway stood out & made a name for himself. On this second album Young Gunz are trying to make a name for themselves. But unfortunately they still can't overtake the lyrical & vocal powerhouse that is Freeway. The Young Gunz current single ''Can't Stop Won't Stop'' is all over the airwaves but that track is nothing compared to any of Freeway's tracks on this album.
As far as production goes there aren't any Just Blaze or Kanye West tracks but production overall is solid with a fair share of head nodding beats that are both car & headphone friendly. The only downside is some of the lyrical performances by some of the lesser known artists. While not horrible there is still definitely room for improvement. Stand out tracks on the album include the tracks featuring Freeway [of course] ''Rolling Down The Freeway'' & ''Still In Effect'' w/ Neef, also Beanie & Jay-Z's ''It's On''.
Overall not a bad album. If you're a Freeway Or Roc fan than you should probably pick this joint up. If your on a budget however, you might want to try it before you buy it. SonicAmp Rating: 7/10 |
